Becoming an EMT has a variety of advantages whether it is a stepping stone or a career goal. For prehealth students aspiring to become a healthcare provider, becoming an EMT is a great introduction to the field.
Here are a few reasons how EMS can help you in your prehealth journey:
Helps develop BLS skills expected later on in professional schools
Introduces a wide range of scenarios from mild to extreme emergencies
Offers volunteer and paid opportunities
Builds a multitude of transferable skills such as working under pressure, communication, teamwork, and documenting
Impacts the community in a unique way
Cares for people of all backgrounds and cultures
Allows for clinical hours to be acquired quickly
Can work towards an Advanced or Paramedic license during gap years
Provides the opportunity for leadership
Becoming an EMT is a great step towards a career in healthcare through the unique opportunities it provides. It also is helpful to have when finding work during gap years.
Some forewarning: EMS is not for everyone. Do not simply become an EMT if you're not truly interested and doing it for your resume. The field of EMS can be time-consuming and take an emotional toll, particularly if it is not something you are passionate about. Our goal as an organization is to help you explore if becoming an EMT is the right path for you through workshops and direct contact with active EMTs who can share their experiences. If EMS is not the right path, that is okay and there are resources at Baylor to help you find other opportunities.
Worried about finances?
Some states, such as Texas, offer scholarships for EMS schooling with the promise of service afterwards. Consider looking into scholarships in your area to see if that is a good option for furthering your education.

Some basic questions to help determine what the best schooling for you is:
Does a community college near you offer summer programs?
What learning style works best for you?
How much time each day can you dedicate to learning?
Are you able to take accountability of your own learning?
